A thoughtful read on navigating emotional authenticity - and staying true to yourself while fostering real, meaningful bonds.
Have you ever looked around and felt like the people are just faking their emotions? Many times, people seem confident, calm, and emotionally charged. They are aware of their career choices and relationship status, and they appear steady in their lives. It feels like they know which direction they are heading into.
The truth, however, is far from what we sometimes see and imagine. Many times, we come across people deliberately faking their lives. Beneath that confidence, they carry doubts in their mind which people rarely speak about. Behind the polished routines, people often question their life purpose, relationships, success, and happiness.
And in those moments, a question arises: is everyone just pretending?
In modern life, people often present a different version of themselves than they actually are or feel. They behave differently at work, with friends, family and online. Thanks to social media, people often highlight their achievements, best moments, and happiness. Rarely do we see people showing their true side - loneliness, confusion, or emotional struggles.
The friend who looks successful may still yearn for more power and money. The lovey-dovey couple may feel incomplete in each other's company. The solo traveller posting happy and beautiful pictures may look lucky, but in reality still be feeling lost. Because in many ways, social life involves a kind of performance - to put up your best part or show the best moments of your life.
It is essential to understand that most people do not intentionally hurt or deceive others. It may happen that they simply don’t know how to deal with emotions – their own and yours. It is more about discomfort here.
People aren’t pretending – they are figuring it out
Because life rarely comes with complete clarity. Human life is constantly changing, and uncertainty arrives at every phase of our lives. People often make decisions based on their limited knowledge.
It feels easier for them to say a quick word or give light comfort instead of going into hard feelings. It is not personal; it is often their way of coping or escaping uneasy moments. Not because they are deceptive, but because they do not wish to show their vulnerable side. This is what we call surface-level engagement.
In a world full of pretence, your honesty matters. You don’t have to act cheerful when you don’t feel like it. When you feel alone in a room full of people, you don’t have to chip in.
Instead, value your own privacy. At the same time, learn to choose wisely. Create space for something more real by being honest with yourself. In the end, most people are not intentionally faking. They are just navigating their own emotional uncertainties by gently setting boundaries, communicating honestly, and quietly observing genuine actions. Perhaps, they are trying to navigate uncertainty while carrying responsibilities and expectations.
In the end, everyone is still figuring things out.
So when the world feels full of masks, quietly return to your own honest heart. Because underneath the polished surface, most of us are doing the same thing: learning how to live one day at a time.
