Still struggling to decide whether they are "the one?" Explore how to evaluate compatibility and handle pre-marriage doubts for a modern partnership

Am I Marrying the Right Person?

We have lost count of how many times someone in the movies is asked how they knew their spouse was “the one.” And, the answer is always the same - “You just now.” But the reality is often different from that. This is one of the major decisions that ripples through your entire life, affecting not just you but your relationship with your loved ones. So, how do you move past the clichés and choose the right person?

The general consensus in this scenario is to follow your gut. But this isn’t always a straightforward affair, is it? For people who are indecisive and plagued with self-doubt, “trusting their gut” pushes them into the deep trenches of a million unanswered questions. And gradually, they end up in a freeze state, where they delay all decision-making until the forces of nature take over all the deciding duties for them.

When you catch yourself wondering whether the person you are dating right now is the perfect spouse material, do a self-evaluation on the small things (hobbies and pet peeves) and the heavy hitters: political beliefs, financial goals, career goals, and family planning ideas. A word of caution - this exercise shouldn’t end up being a one-sided conversation riddled with assumptions. It takes two to keep a marriage alive, and your partner deserves a well-intentioned conversation, where you are transparent about all the doubts you are harbouring.

At the crossroads of matrimony, you have no map. Usually, you face two paths: reject the proposal and keep looking for the grass that is supposedly greener on the other side, or you accept the proposal and commit to the work. But real life seldom comes with guarantees.  The universe has a way of prying even the best-laid plans open with its bare hands. Ultimately, it boils down to a few important questions that guide you towards happiness.

If I decide to marry them, will they help me feel happy with the life we are building?

Will they figure things out with me when the situation changes?

Will they support me when I struggle and listen to me when I feel resentful?

Or, will they leave me to figure it out alone?

It is important to remember that the existence of a flaw-free, perfect partner is a myth. We often stall because we are waiting for a person who mirrors us perfectly. However, real compatibility is less about being identical and more about how your partner fits your life smoothly. Marriage isn’t about finding “the one”; it is about deciding if this is the person you want to hold hands with when life gets tough.

If they are the type to stand beside you rather than blame you, you know you have found a match that will help you build a solid foundation for your future.
