Finding Joy in Simplicity: Escape the Pressures of Modern Life

The world moves at a pace that makes it difficult for a lot of us to even catch up. There is always something more to do, something more to achieve, something more to become. In circumstances like this, simplicity feels like a luxury, almost radical even. Modern life is an anthology of endless notifications, packed schedules, and an ever-growing list of expectations from ourselves and the world around us. In this supersonic speed of life, it is important to remember that joy does not always lie in the grander things but more in the simple experiences that life gives us.

The idea of finding joy in simplicity is not new. Philosophers and thinkers have emphasized and spoken about its value. As Henry David Thoreau wrote in Walden,

Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify.” His words, though written in the 19th century, feel especially relevant today.

A lot of the struggles of modern life come from the constant reaching for more—more success, more stuff, more validation. But as we add more, life can start to feel overwhelming. Simplicity is a quiet alternative. When we let go of what’s not needed and focus on what is, we create space for clarity, presence, and ease. It allows us to break free from the endless cycle of wanting and into a place of gratitude, where happiness is not something we chase but something we notice in the mundane moments of our everyday lives.

Part of the pressure we experience today stems from comparison. Social media often presents curated versions of life—highlight reels that can make our own lives feel insufficient. But comparison rarely brings joy; presence does. When we simplify, we open up space for more presence in our own lives, rather than measuring our lives up against someone else’s.

Simplicity does not necessarily mean giving up everything or living minimally in the extreme sense. It can be as small as choosing to spend an evening without screens, going for a quiet walk, or focusing on one meaningful task instead of juggling many. These small shifts can have a profound impact. A lot of research has shown that when you are able to reduce your mental overload and multitasking, you can significantly lower stress and improve your mental clarity.

There is also a deeper emotional benefit to simplicity. When we remove what is excess, whether it is physical clutter, emotional or moral overcommitment, or constant stimulation, we begin to reconnect with ourselves. We become more aware of what brings us genuine joy: a conversation that lingers, a hobby that absorbs us, or simply a moment of stillness.

Escaping the pressures of modern life does not require a complete overhaul. It begins with small, intentional choices. Choosing less noise. Less comparison. Less urgency. This ensures that you are able to make room for more clarity, more presence, and more joy.

Because sometimes, the simplest life is not the smallest one; it is the one that lets you feel the most joy and satisfaction.
