A heartfelt reflection on the tug-of-war between dreams and responsibilities, when a small step doing what we love can bring quiet fulfilment.
“Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” — Mary Oliver
That line has been repeated so many times that it almost feels like a whisper now. And yet, for anyone standing at a crossroads between a dream and a duty, it still lands with a quiet weight. Just asking means something has already begun.
Which path to follow?
It is not easy to know what to choose when your heart pulls in one direction, and your responsibilities pull in another. For many of us, this question creates pressure: Do you chase something that feels exciting and risky, or stay grounded in what you have already built? You may not get a clear answer at first, but it is worth thinking over.
Responsibilities can be grounding.
There is real strength in showing up consistently and reliably, mainly when those you love depend on you. Being the person others can rely upon is not a small thing. Choosing to stick to what’s expected is not always about fear or resignation. It is about love, survival, or just doing what needs to be done.
Societal norms and traditions framed responsibility as an enemy. But when responsibility is carried out with a good intention, it forms a purpose. It is not a question of whether your duties matter, because they do.
Dreams still exist
Life fills up, schedules get busier, and years pass by. At the same time, an inner voice persistently asks, “What about me?” Just because life becomes busy does not mean that dreams disappear. They wait. Sometimes they get quieter or get buried underground, but they don’t entirely vanish.
And these dreams, they tend to resurface – in a song you hear on a long drive, in a conversation with a friend, in an old diary found on the shelf, and so on.
A Subtle Balance
Not all dreams are lofty. Some may demand only a small space; a habit built slowly over time, say a few hours a week. A class on the weekend. It does not have to be dramatic to be meaningful.
There is no one right path. But if you are asking the question, it is likely because something inside you is stirring, and it deserves to be heard. You do not have to rush. You do not have to choose today. But, maybe there’s a version of your dream that can live quietly beside your responsibilities, at least for now.
Have a Room for Both
Although the idea of choosing between your dream and responsibility may seem distant, both concepts may share the same life.
Think of it as your dutiful 9-to-5 followed by your dreamy 5-to-9. Your working hours fulfil your obligations. Consider the rest of the hours as belonging only to you, with no productivity or ambition. Just spend a few hours doing what you enjoy.
If you are not sure where to begin, then refer to the Ikigai Framework to help you map out your career plans, passions, and skills, which will help you make the right decisions. All you need is a quiet evening and the will to do what matters most to you.
