It reminds us that authentic living is not rejection of others—it’s the integration of both love for self and love for community.
Have you ever paused and wondered whether the choices you are making are truly yours? Or are you walking a path shaped by other people’s expectations, societal pressure, or the deep human need to feel accepted and loved?
Sometimes, life seems subtly directed by unseen forces, like your family, friends, culture, tradition or the quiet voice of society. And somewhere in that, questions began to surface:
"Am I living for myself?
Or am I simply following what others have gently asked of me?"
It is natural to feel unsure. To want acceptance, approval, or a place to fit in is not wrong. It comes from a human need, that gentle part of us that seeks connection and value. Psychologists have long recognized that human beings are naturally wired for social connections. In fact, psychologist Maslow emphasized love and belonging as core human needs essential for personal growth.
Yet, to live only to please others leaves us empty, apart from who we truly are.
But when too much of life is built around pleasing others, your inner voice becomes silent. A quiet emptiness appears – not because something is wrong, but because we may be drifting away from what feels true to your heart.
We often make choices influenced by those we love because relationships in life matter a lot. We care. And we do not wish to disappoint people we care about.
Perhaps you chose a career because your family encouraged it. Or you follow certain roles because society insists on them. Perhaps you keep saying 'Yes' because of the pressure, but inside you really want to say ‘No.’
If you start recognizing yourself, it does not mean you have made mistakes. It simply means you are beginning to see something important. It is the beginning of clarity.
Life does not need to instantly swing from pleasing others to absolute independence. Instead, ask yourself, "How can I balance the expectations of those I love with what my heart dreams of?"
Often, the answer begins with small shifts. A decision made more consciously. A boundary drawn kindly. Start by permitting yourself, with kindness and without guilt, to explore your desires. Your true desires, even when different from others, hold deep value.
That, however, does not mean you turn your back on loved ones; they mean you listen to your voice with honesty and integrity. Sometimes we find meaning not just in independence but in connection and belongingness. The key is awareness.
Ask yourself gently. “Does it feel true, or am I only doing it out of fear of rejection or disappointment?”
The poet E.E. Cummings beautifully says, “To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.” His words remind us with care that it is courageous, though hard, to stay true to who we really are.
So, if you feel caught between your dreams and expectations, try to find the balance. It is okay to respect traditions, and it is also beautifully important to honour your passions, too. Let your life grow as a blend of a beautiful dance between honouring others and staying true to yourself.
